Free Pass

Have you been giving yourself a “Free Pass”?

I am not talking about that movie Hall Pass! But what I am talking about is when circumstances happen in our lives, and we allow it to be an opportunity to stop honoring ourselves.

I discovered that I was doing just this, and the result is that I have gained about 15 pounds. Back in November, I discovered that I had skin cancer. The entire process to have it removed took about 3 weeks from the time of discovery until the time they actually removed it. That is a lot of time for anticipation and worry.  The funny thing is that I didn’t really start giving myself the “Free Pass” until right after the cancer was removed. In fact, the first thing I wanted to do post surgery was go have a margarita with chips and salsa. And to be quite honest with you, I have pretty much just been eating and drinking whenever or whatever I have wanted to since then. Hence, the 15 pounds.

I cannot pinpoint the exact thoughts that led me to allow this “Free Pass”, but  I do know what I haven’t been doing during this time.

Since September of 2020, I had gotten into the habit of planning daily what I would eat that day, and I worked really hard to be mindful of stopping eating once I realized I was satisfied. I also utilized my coaching strategies of allowing urges and calling them what they really were (boredom, buffering, mindless eating).

However, when life hit me with an unknown and a little bit of stress of working full time and trying to build a business, I threw all of that out that window and started telling myself I just didn’t have time for everything.

What a bunch of stinky BS! Yes, life seems to be a bit busier these days and the circumstances just keep coming. That is life! However, I am worth taking care of myself. That is my new thought. That is the thought that I am playing on repeat and believing because I do need to get back to treating myself with respect because I matter.

Here is how I am doing just that.

  • Believing that thought, “I am worth taking care of myself”.
  • Doing my daily plan on a smaller scale that fits with my schedule right now.
  • Reminding myself that I am respecting myself when I stick to my plan when my brain tries to tell me how yummy candy would be
  • Reminding myself how I physically want to feel daily having fueled my body with foods that honoring

So, have you been giving yourself a free pass? Are you ready to get back on track? You’ll notice I didn’t say I am doing a diet or restricting myself of any food groups. What I am doing is using my coaching tools to help me be the person I want to be for myself. Are you ready to start learning and utilizing these skills for yourself? When you work with me, I teach you to transform your thinking so that when you do notice that you’re giving yourself that “Free Pass” you also learn how to bounce right back to the person you want to be. The person who can truly say to herself, “I am worthy of taking care of myself”.

Ladies, I am your midlife ally in this journey!

All my best!
